Frequently Asked Questions

US sit-down restaurants: 18–20% standard, 15% adequate, 25%+ exceptional. Bartenders: $1-2/drink or 20%. Delivery: 10–15% with a $3-5 minimum. Coffee shop: $1 or rounded up.

US convention is on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total adds ~1.5–2% extra effectively. Either is socially acceptable; pre-tax is standard.

Total (bill + tip) ÷ people. Each person's share includes their portion of the tip. If you want to split unevenly, divide the bill manually before calculating.

In the US, server wages are often $2.13/hr (federal tipped minimum) so tips are essentially required. In many European countries, service is included; tipping is appreciated but not expected.

Many restaurants add automatic 18-20% gratuity for parties of 6 or 8+. Check the bill before adding more — you may have already paid the tip.
