Frequently Asked Questions

Tax = Pre-tax × Rate. Total = Pre-tax × (1 + Rate). Example: $100 × 8.25% = $8.25 tax, $108.25 total.

Pre-tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate). Example: $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100 pre-tax. Tax = Total − Pre-tax = $8.25.

Sales tax (US) is added at the final point of sale and shown separately. VAT (EU/UK) is collected at every step of production but displayed prices already include it. Mathematically the calculator handles both via the "amount is total" toggle.

States set their own rates (0% in OR/MT/NH/DE/AK to ~7.25% in CA). Cities and counties add local sales tax on top, so combined rates can reach 9.5%+ in places like Chicago or LA.

Yes — most US states exempt groceries, prescription drugs, and some clothing. UK VAT has zero-rated (food, books) and reduced (5%) categories. This calculator assumes full taxable rate.
