Torque Converter Features

Mechanic Ready

Wheel lug torque (140 N·m = 100 lb·ft), spark plug specs (15–25 N·m), bicycle hex bolts (5–8 N·m). Auto specs covered.

8 Units

From mN·m (small electronics) to kN·m (heavy machinery and structural). Plus kgf·m and kgf·cm common in Asia/EU specs.

SI & Imperial

N·m is the SI unit; lb·ft and lb·in dominate US automotive. kgf·m used in old Japanese/European specs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide by 1.3558. So 100 N·m = 73.76 lb·ft. Conversely, 1 lb·ft = 1.3558 N·m. A typical lug nut spec of 100 lb·ft = 135.6 N·m.

Mathematically the units cancel the same way (kg·m²/s²), but they are conceptually different. N·m measures rotational torque; J measures linear energy. Never use J for torque or N·m for energy in the same calculation without care.

Most passenger cars: 80–100 lb·ft (108–135 N·m). Trucks: 130–175 lb·ft (175–237 N·m). Always check the owner manual — over-tightening warps brake rotors.

Kilogram-force meter = 9.80665 N·m. Common in older Japanese and European auto specs. 10 kgf·m = 98.07 N·m = 72.33 lb·ft.

Bikes use lightweight aluminum/carbon parts that strip easily. Stem bolts: 5–6 N·m. Disc brake calipers: 6–8 N·m. Always use a torque wrench on a carbon frame.
