How It Works

STEP 1

Upload Photos

Upload 2 to 12 photos at once. PNG, JPG, WebP, and GIF formats are supported. For best results, use photos with similar aspect ratios — the collage tool crops each photo to fill its grid cell while preserving the subject. Upload more photos than your chosen layout requires — you'll be able to select which appear in the collage (Pro tier).

STEP 2

Choose Layout & Style

Select a grid layout from 8 presets (1×2 through 4×3). Set the gap between cells (no gap gives a full-bleed mosaic look; 16–24px gaps create a framed grid with clear separation). Choose background colour for the gaps — white is classic and clean, black is bold and magazine-style. Select JPG or PNG output.

STEP 3

Download Collage

Download your collage as a high-resolution JPG (ideal for sharing, printing, and social media) or PNG (for transparency support or lossless quality). The output resolution is automatically calculated based on the source photo resolutions to produce the highest quality collage at the selected grid dimensions — no artificial upsampling.

Photo Collage Features

8 Grid Layout Presets

Choose from 8 grid layouts: 1×2 (side by side), 2×1 (top and bottom), 2×2 (4-photo square grid — great for Instagram), 2×3 (6-photo tall grid), 3×2 (6-photo wide grid), 3×3 (9-photo square — perfect for social media recap posts), 3×4 (12-photo tall grid), 4×3 (12-photo wide grid). Each cell is equal-sized — photos are centre-cropped to fill the cell.

Centre-Crop Photo Filling

Each photo is automatically centre-cropped (object-fit: cover equivalent) to fill its grid cell at the correct aspect ratio — no stretching or squishing. A 4:3 landscape photo placed in a 1:1 square cell has its left and right edges trimmed equally to fill the square. This gives the cleanest, most professional-looking collage regardless of the source photo dimensions.

Custom Gap & Background

Gap size controls the space between grid cells. No gap creates a mosaic effect where photos touch edge-to-edge. Small gaps (4px) add subtle framing. Medium gaps (8–16px) clearly separate each photo. Large gaps (24px) create a bordered grid look. Background colour (white, black, or grey) fills the gaps and any outer border — black gaps with close-cropped photos create a cinema contact sheet aesthetic.

High-Resolution Output

The output resolution is determined by the resolution of your source photos — if you upload 4K photos, the collage is built at 4K scale. Each cell is rendered at the highest resolution of the source photos in the batch, then assembled into the final collage canvas. For social media sharing, source photos of 1200px+ on the short edge give excellent results. For print (300 DPI A4), use 3600px+ sources.

Fast Collage Creation

Photo collages are assembled server-side using optimised image compositing. A 9-photo collage from 3MP photos typically processes in under 10 seconds. Processing time scales with total pixel count — using very high resolution (20MP+) source photos will take longer but produces a higher quality output. For web sharing, source photos of 1500–3000px are the practical sweet spot.

Private & No Account Needed

All uploads use TLS 1.3 encryption. Photos are processed in isolated containers and permanently deleted within 24 hours. No watermark from Multi Converters is added to your collage. No signup, account, or email required for the free tier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Instagram square posts display at 1080×1080px on feed. For a 2×2 collage, use source photos of at least 1080×1080px (each cell will be 540×540px + gap). For a 3×3 collage, source photos of 600×600px+ are sufficient (each cell ≈360×360px). For Instagram Stories (9:16), use a 1×2 vertical collage with portrait-oriented photos at 1080×1920px total. Instagram Reels cover is 9:16, so a 1×2 vertical collage also works well.

Yes — photos of any orientation or aspect ratio can be mixed in the same collage. All grid cells are equal-sized squares by default, so each photo is centre-cropped to fill its cell regardless of whether it's portrait, landscape, or square. If you want to preserve orientation differences, use a custom grid layout (Pro) that allows cells of different aspect ratios — for example, a landscape cell for a wide photo and a square cell for a portrait photo side by side.

The output is capped at 8000×8000px to prevent excessively large files and processing times. In practice, this is more than sufficient for printing: a 8000×8000px JPG at 300 DPI can be printed at 26.7×26.7 inches (67×67cm), which is larger than most poster sizes. For web sharing, outputs of 2000–3000px are typical when using standard social media photos as sources. The actual output size depends on your source photo resolutions.

For photo collages (natural images): JPG at quality 90+ is the best choice — it produces smaller files (50–80% smaller than PNG) with virtually no visible quality loss for photographs. Use PNG when: you need a transparent background between cells (choose "Transparent" background colour), you're creating a collage of graphics or screen captures where PNG compression is more efficient, or you need pixel-perfect lossless quality (e.g., for a design asset). For social media sharing, JPG is the standard and is better supported.

Text captions per cell, a title text area above or below the collage, and custom font selection are available in the Pro tier. In the free tier, the collage output contains only the photos in the grid arrangement. To add text to a free-tier collage, download the collage and use an image editing app (Canva, Google Slides, Preview on macOS, or Photos on iPhone) to overlay text on top of the completed collage.
