How It Works

STEP 1

Upload Your Video

Upload any video file — MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, FLV, WMV, or M4V. The tool reads the video metadata and displays the duration. A video preview is shown in the browser so you can confirm the correct file before extracting the audio. Files up to 100 MB are accepted on the free tier.

STEP 2

Choose Bitrate

Select the MP3 bitrate from 128 to 320 kbps. 192 kbps is recommended for music video extraction — excellent quality at a reasonable file size. For speech, interviews, and voice content, 128 kbps mono delivers a very small file with perfectly clear audio. 320 kbps is best for high-quality music extraction.

STEP 3

Download MP3

Download the extracted audio as MP3. The video file is discarded — only the audio track is kept. The resulting MP3 is named after the original video file for easy identification. It plays on any device, music player, or streaming service without any special software or codecs.

MP4 to MP3 Features

All Major Video Formats

Accepts MP4 (H.264, H.265), MOV (Apple QuickTime), AVI (Windows legacy), MKV (Matroska), WebM (browser-native), FLV (Flash), WMV (Windows Media), and M4V (iTunes). The video container is irrelevant — the tool extracts the audio stream regardless of the video codec used for the picture track.

Bitrate Selection

Choose from 128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps. The audio extracted from most videos is AAC or AC3 encoded — the tool decodes it and re-encodes as MP3 at your chosen bitrate. Setting a bitrate above the source audio quality won't improve it — 192 kbps is the ideal choice for virtually all video audio sources.

Video Preview

Preview the uploaded video in the browser before extracting audio. This ensures you've uploaded the right file and helps confirm the audio content is what you expect — particularly useful for home videos, lecture recordings, and meeting recordings where filenames may not be descriptive.

Stereo & Mono Output

Preserve the original stereo audio from the video or downmix to mono. Most online videos and lectures are effectively mono content recorded in stereo — converting to mono halves the file size with no perceptible quality difference for speech content. Stereo is preferred for music videos and concert recordings.

Common Use Cases

Extract music from concert videos, save podcast audio from video recordings, pull the soundtrack from a film clip, create MP3s from downloaded YouTube videos (for personal use), extract lecture audio from screen recordings, save voice notes from video messages, or rip interview audio from a video file for transcription.

Private & No Account Needed

TLS 1.3 encrypted uploads. Files permanently deleted within 24 hours. No watermarks. No account, signup, or personal information required for the free tier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, FLV, WMV, and M4V are all supported. The video container format doesn't matter — the tool extracts the audio stream from inside the container and converts it to MP3 regardless of the video codec (H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1, etc.). If your video plays sound, this tool can extract it.

The MP3 quality is limited by two factors: the original video's audio quality (its bitrate and codec), and the MP3 bitrate you choose for output. If the source video has 128 kbps AAC audio, selecting 320 kbps MP3 output won't add quality beyond the original. Select an output bitrate at or above the source bitrate for optimal results. At 192 kbps MP3, most video audio sources are indistinguishably reproduced.

The free tier extracts the default (first) audio track from the video. This is typically the main language track. Videos with multiple audio tracks (e.g. commentary, alternate languages, director's cut audio) require the Pro tier which lets you select which audio track to extract before processing.

The free tier extracts the full audio track. To extract a specific segment, first extract the full audio using this tool, then use the Audio Trim tool to cut it to the desired start and end times. Alternatively, use the Pro tier which includes trim-before-extract, allowing you to set a start and end timestamp before extracting so only the selected portion is processed.
