How It Works

Convert AVIF to lossless PNG in three steps

STEP 1

Upload AVIF Files

Drop your AVIF files onto the upload zone or click to browse. Supports both .avif (single image) and .avifs (AVIF image sequence, first frame used) files. All AVIF profiles including 8-bit SDR, 10-bit HDR, and images with transparency (alpha channel) are supported. Free plan: up to 20 files, 200 MB total.

STEP 2

Configure PNG Output

Choose PNG compression level (lossless regardless of level — only affects file size vs speed), whether to preserve the alpha channel from the AVIF, and an optional maximum output dimension. PNG compression is always lossless: every pixel from the AVIF decode is stored exactly.

STEP 3

Download PNG Images

Your PNG files are ready in seconds. Unlike AVIF which requires a modern browser or specialised software, PNG opens in every application from 1995 onwards. Use your converted PNGs in Photoshop, Figma, Sketch, Word, PowerPoint, older browsers, and any legacy software without compatibility worries.

AVIF to PNG Features

High-fidelity AVIF to lossless PNG conversion

Lossless PNG Output

The decoded pixel data from your AVIF file is encoded into PNG using lossless DEFLATE compression. Unlike transcoding to JPEG, converting to PNG introduces zero additional quality loss beyond what was already present in the AVIF's original lossy encoding. The resulting PNG is pixel-for-pixel identical to the decoded AVIF, making it ideal for design assets and further editing.

Full Alpha Channel Support

AVIF supports full 8-bit or 10-bit alpha channels, making it increasingly popular for web graphics, logos, and UI assets where transparency is essential. Our converter preserves the complete alpha channel in the PNG output, producing a full RGBA PNG that retains all transparent and semi-transparent regions. This is the main advantage over converting to JPG, which cannot store any transparency.

Fast AV1 Decoding

AV1 decoding is computationally intensive — it was designed for video use where GPU-accelerated decoders are available. Our converter uses a highly optimised server-side AV1 decoder (dav1d) that achieves near-real-time decode speeds even without GPU acceleration. A typical 4 MP AVIF file decodes in under 2 seconds on our conversion servers.

Batch — 20 Files at Once

Convert up to 20 AVIF files to PNG in a single batch job. All files are processed with the same settings and the results are packaged into a ZIP archive for download. Perfect for bulk-converting icon sets, design assets, or AI-generated images saved in AVIF format that need to be used in design tools or legacy software.

Wide Colour Gamut Handling

AVIF supports wide colour gamut images using Display P3, Rec. 2020, and other wide-gamut colour spaces. Our converter detects the AVIF colour space from its embedded ICC profile and either preserves the ICC profile in the PNG (for colour-managed applications like Photoshop) or converts to sRGB for maximum compatibility with standard displays and applications that don't handle colour management.

Private & No Account Needed

All uploads are encrypted with TLS 1.3. Files are processed in isolated containers with no cross-user data access. Uploaded AVIF files and converted PNGs are permanently deleted within 24 hours. No watermarks are ever added. No account, email, or signup is required — convert immediately without creating a profile or providing personal information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose PNG over JPG when your AVIF has transparency (alpha channel) — JPG cannot store transparency at all and would composite transparent areas to white. Also choose PNG when you need a lossless intermediate for further editing in Photoshop, Figma, or GIMP — PNG preserves every pixel from the AVIF decode, while JPG would introduce additional compression artefacts on top of the AVIF's existing lossy encoding. Choose JPG when file size is the priority and transparency isn't needed.

Yes — AVIF supports full alpha transparency using an 8-bit or 10-bit alpha plane, stored as a separate AV1-encoded monochrome image alongside the colour image. AVIF's alpha channel support is one of its advantages over older formats. AI image generators, design tools, and web platforms increasingly export transparent images as AVIF. Our converter detects and preserves the alpha channel when converting to PNG, producing a fully transparent output image.

No additional quality loss occurs when converting to PNG, because PNG is lossless. The AVIF is decoded to a raw pixel buffer (this step may already involve quality loss if the AVIF was lossy-encoded), and those raw pixels are then encoded to PNG without any further compression artefacts. The PNG will look identical to the AVIF at the same viewing size. The only case where PNG might look slightly different is if the AVIF used a wide colour gamut and the PNG viewer doesn't support ICC profiles.

AVIF achieves much higher compression ratios than PNG — often 3–10× smaller for the same image. A 200 KB AVIF might produce a 1–3 MB PNG. This is expected and unavoidable: AVIF is a heavily compressed lossy format, while PNG is a lossless format that stores all pixel data explicitly. The PNG is "bigger" in bytes but contains the same visual information. If you need smaller output, use our AVIF to JPG converter, which re-applies lossy compression and produces much smaller files.

Yes. PNG is natively supported by all versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Figma, Sketch, Affinity Designer, GIMP, Canva, and every other major design tool. This is often the primary reason to convert AVIF to PNG — to bring an AVIF file into a design tool that doesn't yet support AVIF natively (Photoshop requires an AVIF plugin). The resulting PNG can be imported, edited, and used as any other PNG in your workflow.
